FinTechs pioneer Finastra strengthens its disruptive power with Omnia

As a FinTech leader, Finastra has implemented Omnia to support its 9,500 employees across the globe in their continuous quest to disrupt the financial services industry with its innovative and open platform solutions. The new intranet platform will enable Finastra to strengthen internal communications, boost findability, and ensure that its digital workplace is compatible with the very latest technological developments and user needs for years to come.

A flexible and future-oriented platform for growth

Formed in 2017 through the merging of Misys and D+H, Finastra provides expertise and legacy financial software across retail banking, transaction banking, lending, treasury, and capital markets. The company is one of the world’s largest FinTechs and, with its next-generation open Fusion software architecture and cloud ecosystem, it’s today the pioneering force in the development and use of financial software. With more than 9,500 employees and offices in 42 countries, Finastra serves over 9,000 customers, including 90 of the top 100 banks globally.

Finastra’s previous intranet platform served the organization well as a Content Management System, CMS, but was inflexible and restricted in terms of its ability to allow for integration and the addition of new functionality. The improvement most urgently needed was the facility to integrate Microsoft 365 with the intranet, since this was and is the organization’s primary collaboration and work toolset. After researching the requirements for integration, Darko and his team decided the best option was to find a new standard intranet platform with better integration connectors and a more flexible architecture.

– In planning our envisioned future digital workplace, we soon realized it was going to be exorbitantly costly to create it on the previous platform. We, therefore, conducted thorough market research, scrutinizing all top-rated platforms, including Omnia. Offering roughly 80% of the functionality we were looking for, it clearly stood out from all the others we studied. None of the other platforms can compare to Omnia in terms of complete functionality. Obviously, there’s room for improvement, or rather, we’ll need to add some functions further down the road. But with Omnia, this is easy to do. Its flexible and future-oriented architecture, combined with the development roadmap for Omnia and customer-oriented approach convinced us it was the right choice, Darko underlines.

Remote implementation with a strict deadline

The implementation project started in June 2020 and the new intranet was released globally to all 9,500 users on December 1st. On account of the pandemic, the project was managed purely through digital communication channels.

– We had a very strict deadline. Our new intranet had to be launched on December 1st and not a day later. Otherwise, we would have been hit by license costs for our old platform for another year. There was a huge amount of content to be migrated into the new platform, requiring a lot more time and effort than originally expected. But we managed to pull it off in time thanks to the meticulous preparatory work we conducted internally. Our preparations included getting every key stakeholder on board, as well as conducting detailed inventory and analysis of information and functionality needs so as to nail down the precise requirements for the new intranet. But it really paid off spending all that time creating a solid specifications sheet before the implementation started, Darko emphasizes.

Modernizing the digital workplace with Omnia

Two of the main objectives of Finastra’s new intranet were to integrate it with Microsoft 365 and to install a platform on which Finastra can evolve and continue modernizing its digital workplace without restrictions.

– Integrating Omnia with Microsoft 365 was an effortless and smooth process. Overall, the intranet has been well received by users, with one of the features they instantly applauded being the new login process, or rather the lack of it. As a result of the integration with Microsoft 365, they are now automatically logged into the intranet. This used to be a nuisance for many users in the previous intranet. You often got ejected for all kinds of reasons, for instance, if you hadn’t updated your password by its due date. Other acknowledged improvements are the intranet’s new fresh and welcoming layout, its more advanced notifications possibilities, and much better search functionality, says Darko, adding:

– With the new platform in place, we’ll now forge ahead and see how we can make better use of Microsoft’s toolbox and other applications and cloud services. For example, we’d like to be able to push notifications from the most-used Microsoft 365 applications on the intranet, and vice versa.
